Medical Record Analysis

Do you need critical illness cover?

You can’t know what’s around the corner for your health, but you can make sure you’re prepared financially.

Think about expenses you’d need to cover if you were critically ill and couldn’t work. It might be monthly outgoings like rent payments and general bills, or instalments on a loan or a repayment mortgage. If you don’t have savings to fall back on, getting cover can help take financial worry away while you’re recovering or having treatment.

How much critical illness cover do you need?

It depends on things like what you want to cover, how much you’re looking to pay each month, and for how long. Your insurer can arrange either a combined or separate critical illness plan.

Can Critical Illness Insurance be level or decreasing term?

Just like life insurance a critical illness policy can be level, meaning it would pay out the same amount throughout the term of the policy or decreasing meaning it would reduce in line with a repayment mortgage.

Our partners work with the UK's leading life insurers to find you the right cover and as such each insurers definitions are terms are slightly different. The below is just a generic guide to critical illness insurance in the UK, when you submit an enquiry the advisor you are refered to will provide you with any additional information you may need.

What's covered by Critical Illness?

  • Lump sum payment                                                 If you’re diagnosed with a critical illness that meets your insurers policy definition, and survive for the defined number of days.

  • Numerous conditions covered
Each insurer is different but typically they cover between 50-65 illnesses. They all cover core illnesses like heart attack, cancers and strokes to name but a few.

  • Flexible length of cover
Again each insurer is different but typically you can choose from 5 to 50 years – and the cover can last until you’re 75

  • Joint to a single policy
If you separate from your partner, some insurers allow you to split your policy into two single policies, and won’t have to answer any new health and lifestyle questions

  • Choose cover of up to £1 million
Choose the right amount of cover for you to help you when you need it most.

What's not covered

  • If you're diagnosed with a critical illness outside the policy term
You won’t be covered after your policy ends

  • If you don’t survive the defined number of  days following diagnosis

  • If you pass away
Your policy will end and the insurer won’t pay out. If you have a joint policy and one person passes away, cover typically will continue for the other policyholder

  • If you don't pay your premiums
Your cover will stop. The policy has no cash-in value at any time

  • If you’re diagnosed with a critical illness not listed in your insurers policy
    You won’t be covered

  • Once the policy pays out, it ends
